The Italtrans hives have arrived at our warehouse in Calcio
We launched our urban beekeeping project by installing 10 custom-built hives in the green space at the Calcio logistics center. The hives are home to approximately 600,000 bees and are managed in collaboration with Apicoltura Urbana, with the goal of promoting sustainability and protecting biodiversity.
An initiative dedicated to sustainability and the protection of our ecosystem, born from the company’s commitment to promoting education on environmental responsibility.
Insects are essential to the health of our planet. Bees, in particular, account for 75% of the pollination of all crops globally; without their work, one in every three bites of food we eat would not exist; in fact, they protect biodiversity by facilitating the reproduction of 90% of plants and thus balancing ecosystems. The hives also contribute to environmental monitoring; it is estimated that the bees in each hive perform approximately 18 million daily micro-samplings across various environmental matrices (air, water, and soil), covering a radius of over 3 km in the surrounding area.
Italian Ligustica bees, chosen for their docility and adaptability, have been introduced and will take up residence in their new “home” shortly before Easter; a professional beekeeper will maintain and care for the hives throughout the year.
A flower meadow and lavender bushes have been planted near the hive to assist the bees with their flowering during the pollination phase.
