Italtrans achieves Certification For Sustainable Tire Management
The Michelin Group has awarded Italtrans SPA the Certificate for Sustainable Tyre Management, certified by Dekra. This is an important recognition that rewards the sustainable management of truck tyres carried out by Italtrans thanks to G.B. Trasporti, the Group’s in-house workshop.
The entire tire life cycle management process implementation allows for performance optimization and concrete results in terms of energy savings and emission reduction. In 2024, an estimated reduction of 449.2 tons of CO2 and 147.8 tons of raw materials was achieved, equivalent to 0.32 tons of CO2 avoided per vehicle per 100,000 km.
The estimate was calculated based on the number of retreaded and rebuilt tires fitted by the company and the CO2 and raw material savings generated by their use.
The management process used by Italtrans guarantees four life cycles for tires. Once a new tire has reached its maximum wear, it is removed by G.B. Trasporti’s tire specialists, retreaded, and refitted. The entire process not only optimizes durability and performance, but also saves around 70% of raw materials. This process is made possible thanks to the collaboration with Michelin Italiana and the retreader Gommauto Ambrosiana SPA.
Germano Bellina, President of Italtrans, states, “I am pleased and proud of the work done by the entire team. This certification not only celebrates Italtrans’ commitment, but also serves as an incentive to continue on the path toward sustainability and innovation.”
The decision to adopt the tire regrooving process is just one of the actions that demonstrate the attention and care given to sustainability in the management of the vehicle fleet. Since 2023, G.B. Trasporti and Italtrans have been inflating the tires of their fleet with nitrogen. This choice has the advantage of reducing the problems of rim oxidation commonly caused by inflation with air and allows pressure to be kept constant, ensuring more linear consumption and greater safety for personnel. Nitrogen is an inert gas, which reduces the risk of explosions and accidents to zero.
