Italtrans launches the use of hvo, the new sustainable fuel
Italtrans, which has always been committed to reducing its environmental impact, is taking another step forward on the road to sustainability: since September, over a hundred vehicles in its fleet—particularly those refueling at the Calcinate hub—have been powered by the new HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) diesel fuel.
It is a hydrotreated vegetable oil produced according to the principles of the circular economic model. It is obtained from the processing of renewable paraffinic waste materials – such as vegetable oil, tallow, or used cooking oil – and a residual portion of vegetable oils. Its fossil hydrocarbon-free composition and low carbon content differentiate it from diesel and make it a sustainable fuel thanks to its low levels of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants.
HVO also provides good energy efficiency, allowing for greater vehicle autonomy and, consequently, reduced consumption. It is also highly biodegradable and therefore less harmful in the event of leaks or spills than other fuels. Its high cetane number ensures good performance in cold starts and reduces engine noise, limiting noise and particulate emissions. Finally, it is free of aromatics or polyaromatics, compounds that have an environmental impact.
“We have long been committed to making our fleet not only more efficient, but above all less environmentally impactful,” says Paola Bellina, Chief Operating Officer, explaining the choice of the new fuel. “In 2023, we invested €22.5 million in the purchase of 289 latest-generation Euro 6 vehicles to replace less efficient ones. We also have four electric vehicles and 91 liquid natural gas (LNG) trucks. Now, the choice of HVO is a further step forward in reducing pollution. In fact, it is estimated that its use will reduce greenhouse gas emissions produced during the life cycle by 60% to 90% compared to conventional diesel.”
