DIRE FARE DONARE – LET’S DEFEAT LEUKEMIA.
Italtrans and Associazione Albergoni join forces to promote the culture of donation.
We are proud to support the project “DIRE FARE DONARE – Sconfiggiamo la leucemia” (SAY DO DONATE – Let’s defeat leukemia) promoted by Associazione Albergoni, spreading the culture of donation and contributing concretely to the membership campaign.
On Tuesday, April 29, the Albergoni Association’s Mobile Unit was at the Calcinate headquarters to educate employees about how to donate and collect samples from volunteer donors on site. From a simple saliva sample taken on the spot, it is possible to determine compatibility with patients in need and then donate hematopoietic stem cells through a blood draw.
“Italtrans immediately showed its willingness and commitment by participating in the project and promoting it among its staff,” comments Maurizio Albergoni, president of the association. “Since 2010, we have registered more than 1,800 potential donors, a precious resource for patients awaiting transplants. This year, we have also started collaborating with companies, with positive results.”
Italtrans has more than 1,000 employees at its Calcinate hub, working in transport, logistics, workshops, and offices. The company has always been active in supporting the local community through partnerships promoting a culture of donation and prevention, support for cultural events—such as the Landscape Festival and Christmas Design—and collaborations with schools and higher education institutions.
The Federica Albergoni ONLUS Association was founded in 2010 thanks to the persistence and determination of Maurizio Albergoni in memory of his daughter Federica, with the aim of promoting bone marrow donation. To do so, it uses a new and minimally invasive method. Using a mobile unit, the first of its kind in Italy, it collects saliva samples from volunteer donors and sends them to the Immunogenetics Laboratory of the Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine Department of the Papa Giovanni XXII Hospital to analyze their compatibility with requesting patients. The donation process is completed with a blood sample from which the hematopoietic stem cells used for bone marrow transplantation are extracted.
